The fabric of Sheffield history is almost entirely home-made . Six vital contributions - the inventions of the water-grinding wheel, the spring knife, crucible steel, the steam hammer, Bessemer steel and the open-hearth furnace-were certainly made by men not even English, and the coming of the Leaders and Tudors had been of great benefit to the silver industry; but every other important development was begun by natives of Hallamshire, and the contributions from outside were made fruitful by them.
